Location, Location, Location

The Susquehannock Indians knew what they were doing when they settled the area where the Susquehanna River empties into the Chesapeake Bay. John Smith saw its appeal in 1608, and the town was first settled by a colonist in 1658. The town’s name, which means “charming harbor” or “harbor of grace,” was suggested by the Marquis de Lafayette. A statue of this famous French soldier, who played an important role in the American Revolution, stands in the town along the Lafayette Trail. Visitors will literally follow in Lafayette’s footsteps as they stroll through town.
