Alum Bay is a sandy cove at the westerly end of the Isle of Wight. Close by, the Needles Rocks with its lighthouse warns shipping of the hazards when rounding the point from the Solent then along the coast known as the Back of the Wight. It is notorious for shipwrecks.

The views plus the variety of sand colours has made this bay a mecca for tourists and in Victorian times a new art form sprung up - the sand picture.

A Brief History of Alum Bay

The undulating landmass of the Isle of Wight tells of the turbulence beneath the earth's surface. Within a distance of about two miles, the age of the exposed cliffs at Alum Bay go from 25 million years at the northern end to 35 million years towards the Needles Lighthouse.
